Pilot Study of Benign Endometrial and Ovarian Tissues

RATIONALE: Collecting and storing samples of tissue, blood, and urine from patients
undergoing a hysterectomy for a noncancerous condition to test in the laboratory in the
future may help doctors identify biomarkers related to cancer risk.

PURPOSE: This research study is collecting endometrial and ovarian tissues samples from
patients without cancer undergoing hysterectomy.

OBJECTIVES:

- Collect blood and tissue samples from patients undergoing hysterectomy for a
non-cancerous condition to help doctor identify markers that would indicate increased
risk for developing endometrial cancer.

OUTLINE: This is a pilot study.

Patients complete questionnaires including information on race and ethnic background,
education, marital status, family history, height, weight, pregnancy history, smoking
history, medication history, and history about menstrual periods and menopausal symptoms.

Blood and urine samples are collected prior to surgery. Tissue samples of fat and from the
removed uterus and ovaries are collected during hysterectomy. Samples are analyzed by
immunostaining to assess the presence, number, location, and size of foci containing PTEN
-null glands for future research studies.
