NPC Research is a research organization dedicated to the standards of GCP, striving to collect reliable data while protecting subject rights and safety. NPC Research was started in 2003 as part of Neuropsychiatric Center and Oklahoma Center for Pain Control. The Neuropsychiatric Center is a free standing psychiatric outpatient facility established in 1982 in south Oklahoma City, specializing in general psychiatry including adolescent, adult, and geriatric psychiatry. The focus is general psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and psychiatric care of patients with the following disorders:

Siavash Nael, M.D. is the medical director of the clinic and the principal investigator for NPC Research. He is a board certified neuropsychiatrist who has been in private practice in Oklahoma City for over 25 years. His clinical research experience dates back to 1978, but he has been consistently involved as a principal investigator at this location since 2001. Dr. Nael is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Pain Association, and the American Psychiatric Association. He is a frequent lecturer on both mental health issues and chronic pain. Dr. Nael is committed to helping hurting people, whether their pain is emotionally or physically based. His passion to find the best treatments possible naturally led to an active interest in medical research. Past trials have dealt with MDD, physical symptomatology of depression, depression in the elderly, and bipolar I and bipolar II depression. He has also conducted many pain trials, including studies dealing with opioid treatment, OA of the knees, fibromyalgia, DPNP, and chronic low back pain.

Mary Allen Carey, PhD, RN, CNS has served as a sub-investigator for several trials at NPC. Dr. Carey received her BSN from Loyola University, her MSN from the University of Illinois, and her PhD from Northwestern University. She is Professor Emeritus with the University of Oklahoma and has had a forty year career in academia, research, and clinical therapy. She conducts frequent Continuing Professional Education workshops in the fields of mental health and psychopharmacology.

The site staff has been well-trained in ICH_GCP. Marie Stump, BS, CCRC has been a coordinator here since 2003 and was certified last year (2008) by ACRP. Angelia Moore, CMA joined the research team in 2005 and is also the site's phlebotomist. They are both experienced with electronic data capture, IVRS, ClinPhone, and electronic diaries. The staff has experience with completing DEA 222 forms for shipping and handling controlled drugs and they have current IATA certification. The site is able to use a central IRB and both have worked with NEIRB, WIRB, Schulmans, and Quorum in the past. The staff has been certified in CPR. Both coordinators have experience in patient recruitment and in regulatory affairs. The NPC staff never forgets the vital role that volunteer subjects play in bringing new medications to market. NPC treats every study subject with respect and consideration. The staff has a strong commitment to patient safety and adherence to SOPs and individual protocols.
Our data base is comprised of individuals who reflect the diversity of our general area. To date, our studies have all been limited to persons over the age of 18 so we have had subjects ranging in age from 19 to 85, which is representative of the population in our area. We have had about a 60/40 ratio of women to men in our studies which is also consistent with our area. Our area is primarily made up of people who identify themselves as either Caucasian, Hispanic, Native American, or African American. Our studies have reflected this diversity as well.

NPC is conveniently located in South Oklahoma City, a major part of the metro's population of more than one million people. NPC is one block from a 369 bed hospital. The office is located on a city bus route for those metro subjects who might need public transportation. The practice location and established history draws patients from the metro area and from surrounding small towns to NPC for general psychiatry, and from the entire state for the pain practice. The building is single storied and handicap accessible. The site has well-equipped exam rooms with ECG machines, non-defrosting freezer for PK samples, and an on-site laboratory for lab draws and urine screenings. The site also has a secure storage room for investigational drug and the building has a security system.
