North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, one of the largest integrated health care systems in the United States, provides medical coverage for patients in five counties. At the hub of the 15 hospital System is North Shore University Hospital, a 744 bed hospital with an academic affiliation to New York University School of Medicine, and Long Island Jewish Hospital with an academic affiliation to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The Program in Novel Therapeutics was established in 1990 to foster clinical research in the area of new drug development for musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases. This Center specializes in basic and clinical investigation in the areas of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, lymphocyte biology, autoimmunity, metabolic bone disease, cartilage transplantation, and molecular genetics. Facilities include an outpatient as well as an inpatient clinical research unit for phase I-IV studies.

The Program in Novel Therapeutics has performed over 70 phase I-IV studies with a variety of sponsors.

Our Program has performed studies with drugs and biologics in the following disease categories:

The Program in Novel Therapeutics is based in the Division of Rheumatology at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Lake Success, New York. Investigators span many facilities of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, including North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Hospital, Schneider Children's Hospital, and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Because the Program is located in one of the most densely populated areas of the country and draws from a population of over five million, patient enrollment for study protocols has been excellent. Patient recruitment has also been enhanced by a computerized database; which currently contains 45,000 patients and is growing at a rate of 2,000 patients per year. Other facilities include: a 6 bed unit devoted to infusional therapy, a gene therapy unit, musculoskeletal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), skeletal radiology, minus seventy degree freezers, a bone densitometer (Hologic), and an on-site IRB. The immunology research laboratories, which house technology to perform basic serologic tests, PCR, HLA typing, flow cytometry, DNA sequencing, peptide sequencing and synthesis, and high throughput genotyping expression analysis using DNA microchip arrays, are available for those protocols requiring specialized in vitro work. Utilizing rodent models of arthritis, this facility can perform pre-clinical evaluation of agents in development for rheumatoid and other types of inflammatory arthritis.
