The Critical Care Clinical Research Center at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport was established in 1991, and provides comprehensive clinical research in Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine. The Center is a segment of the Critical Care Medicine Division, and is affiliated with the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center is a tertiary academic health sciences institution that serves a high acuity urban/suburban community, and is a referral center for the population of north Louisiana. The Center is also affiliated with the Pediatric Critical Care Division of the Department of Pediatrics.

The Center provides quality clinical research in a variety of clinical areas that include sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, infectious diseases, gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders, cardiac failure, neurological injury, trauma, acute care, and many others.

The Clinical Research Center also participates as the clinical arm of the Divisions basic science research program, including functional genomics of sepsis and trauma, mechanisms of ischemic cerebral injury, and development of extracorporeal therapies for the support of organ failure.

The Center has experience in the conduct of Phase I, II, III and IV trials for pharmaceutical firms, device manufacturers, and contract research organizations, including Alliance Pharmaceuticals, Astra-Zeneca, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, BYK Canada, CardioPulmonics, CareStat, Centocor, Covance, Discovery Laboratories, Eisai, Eli Lilly, Glaxo Smith Kline, ICOS, Inveresk Research, Knoll Laboratories, Liposome Co, Miles Laboratories, Ortho-Biotech, Omnicare, Ortho-McNeil, Pharmaceutical Product Development, Pharmacia, Rhone-Poulenc-Rorer, Sanofi-Synthelabo, Santarua, SCIOS, Wyeth-Ayerst.

Steven A. Conrad, MD PhD MBA, CCRI, Professor of Medicine and Emergency Medicine, is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medicine. He is a Certified Clinical Research Investigator and has extensive clinical research experience. He has served as Chairman of the Institutional Review Board for Human Investigation, and on the institution's Clinical Research Committee.

Laurie R. Grier, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Emergency Medicine, is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. She is director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit, and has been conducting trials in critical illness as principal and sub-investigator since 1993.

L. Keith Scott, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. He has been conducting trials as principal and sub-investigator since 1999.

Richard H.Turnage, MD, FACS, Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, is board certified in Surgery. He has extensive experience conducting clinical trials in trauma and surgical critical care.

Elizabeth I. Caskey, RN, BSN, CCRC is a Clinical Research Coordinator with nine years experience in critical care nursing. She has completed training courses in clinical research through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and Louisiana State University and has attained certification as a Clinical Research Coordinator with the ACRP.

Kim Hutchinson, RN, BSN,CCRN, is a Lead Coordinator. Kim has 10 years of Intensive Care nursing experience and 3 years as a clinical research coordinator in the Critical Care research department at LSUHSC-Shreveport. She is an ACLS and CPR instructor affiliated with the American Heart Association and is nationally recognized as a Critical Care Registered Nurse by the AACN and continues her education through critical care and research seminars.

Stephanie Self, RN, BSN, is a Study Coordinator. Stephanie has 10 years of Intensive Care nursing experience and is currently working on her CCRN certification.


LSU Health Sciences Center is located in Shreveport, Louisiana. Immediately adjacent and across the Red River is Bossier City. The Shreveport-Bossier metropolitan area encompasses a population of over 400,000. Referrals to the health sciences center come from most regions of the state, covering approximately 3 million of the states population. LSUHSC offers care to all segments of the population, and also provides the areas indigent care.

Louisiana State University Hospital Health Sciences Center is an academic health science center serving North Louisiana with referrals from all over the state. We have five intensive care units staffed by board-certified intensivists, including a Level I Medical/Coronary ICU, Surgical ICU, Burn ICU, and Pediatric ICU. The hospital has the area's only Level I Trauma Center, and the Emergency Department sees about 60,000 patients per year. The Hospital and its outpatient centers are easily accessible by personal or public transportation.

The Health Sciences Center also includes the School of Medicine, School of Graduate Studies, and School of Allied Health Professions, and is affiliated with the Biomedical Research Institute of Northwest Louisiana.
