Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) has over 30 years of research experience. The Clinical Research Center was established in 2006 to centralize research administration and support the efforts of EMMC staff participating in clinical trials and investigator-initiated research.

The Clinical Research Center is involved in all aspects of clinical trials and has trained research coordinators and database specialists who organize, facilitate, and coordinate trials. Center staff are involved in all stages of this process, including prospecting for new trials, writing IRB protocols, consenting patients, and collecting and analyzing data.

The Clinical Research Center draws from numerous patient populations in EMMC's catchment area. These include:

The EMMC Clinical Research Center employs a management team and support staff that include certified clinical research coordinators, research associates, research administrators, grant writers, biostatisticians, and medical editors. All EMMC employees conducting research are required to complete training in the protection of human research participants and Good Clinical Practice.

The experienced professional staff serve as a liaison between clinical investigators and clinical trial sponsors, providing support in all areas of clinical trial budgeting, contracting, management, and operations. The Center also maintains a database of principal investigators in multiple specialty areas, and provides referrals to physicians for research opportunities.


The EMMC patient population consists of a large percentage of elderly patients and a high percentage of lower income residents, most of whom live in rural areas.

Located in Bangor, Maine, EMMC is a tertiary care teaching hospital. Under community direction, it has grown from a five-bed general hospital into a comprehensive medical center with 411 beds, 23 outlying physician practices, and over 70,000 Emergency Department visits per year. EMMC and its medical staff of 544 physicians provide specialty and intensive services to the northern two-thirds of the State of Maine.

Eastern Maine Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in healthcare, providing exemplary service to the people of central, northern, and eastern Maine. EMMC is a Level 2 ACS-accredited Trauma Center and host of LifeFlight of Maine, a statewide medical helicopter service that transports critically ill and injured patients. Other noteworthy recognitions include: an ACS-accredited Surgical Weight Loss Program and Level 1A ACS-accredited Bariatric Center; designation of the Breast and Osteoporosis Center as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by The American College of Radiology's Commission on Quality and Safety and by the Commission on Breast Imaging; and EMMC named as one of the 100 Most Wired Hospitals in 2008 and 2009 by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

The Medical Center provides the community it serves a resource for healthcare and health information, a source of support and assistance for area physicians and other healthcare providers, and a training ground for the health professionals of the future.

EMMC also provides outreach clinics to many local hospitals in the region, allowing easier access for patients and supporting the role of those hospitals in their communities.

EMMC is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and licensed by the State of Maine.
