Internal Medicine Associates of Florence created Clinical Research Associates, LLC in 2006 as an organization separate from their medical practice for the purpose of phase II, III, and IV clinical trials. The practitioners, Dr. Steve Ross and Dr William Boulware have been involved in the practice of Internal Medicine for over 20 years in Florence, SC. During that time they have participated in several short term studies and now want to provide dedicated resources to clinical trials through Clinical Research Associates, LLC. They will continue to maintain their medical practice.

Drs. Ross and Boulware are Board certified Internists. Their interests are in pulmonary disease, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, lipidemias, diabetes, sinusitis, pneumonia. Dr Ross and Dr. Boulware are currently involved as principal investigators or sub-investigators in studies sponsored by Merck, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis, Daiichi-Sankyo, and Forest Research Institute. Studies have been conducted and are ongoing in diabetes, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and arthritis.

Drs. Steve Ross and William Boulware are the Principal Investigators. They have participated in a variety of studies related to hypertension, diabetes, sinusitis, pneumonia. Amanda Coleburn, Dr.P.H. is a Board certified advanced practice nurse who has conducted and participated in a variety of intervention outcome studies.

Amanda Coleburn, Dr. P.H., Clinical Research Coordinator, has been actively involved as a nurse practitioner for 30 years. She managed a research program for Family Medicine residents while a faculty member of the residency program in Family Medicine at McLeod Regional Medical Center. She has developed, conducted and participated in a number of research projects and has a specialty in biostatistics and epidemiology. She has earned several contact hours in Budgeting, Issues in Clinical Research, GCP, and Fundamentals of CRC.


The site is located in the hypertension capital of the United States. It is not too far behind in diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Obesity is an ongoing characteristic of the population as is tuberculosis. There is a major referral hospital in the area and the practices of the Principal Investigators are large.

Clinical Research Associates,LLC is located in a newly renovated building which houses both Internal Medicine Specialists of Florence and Clinical Research Associates. The facility was designed for clinical studies and has separate interviewing and waiting areas. There is space to provide for the privacy of patients and families, a private exam room and an area for conversation. The lab is centrally located and provides phlebotomy services. Space is also provided for monitors. This space provides privacy for them including hookups for computers. Services available on site include pulmonary function studies, EKG, nuclear stress testing, CT scanning capabilities as well as radiographic services and bone density studies. There is an electrocardiography technician and a sonographer available to the site three days a week. The site is within three miles of both hospitals. There is public transportation available.
