Miami Florida Clinical Trials & Facilities – City Spotlight

There are numerous clinical trial facilities in Florida that offer research for patients with various types of diseases. Today we highlight some of the clinical trials in Miami, and highlight two facilities doing some great work. Miami Children’s Hospital is one of the main hospitals that cater toward the many diseases that affect children. Jackson Health Systems is another main facility located throughout Miami with six different hospitals in the system.

Miami Children’s Hospital performs several clinical studies. They are highly recognized and have been ranked for four years straight (2008 to 2011-2012) as one of the best in the nation. Additionally, the Miami Children’s Hospital was one of ten centers to participate in a clinical trial using a device that helps treat children with ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) known as CardioSEAL. The Miami Children’s Hospital was also the first hospital to successfully separate conjoined twins in the state of Florida and the Miami Children’s Hospital Brain Institute is the first in the nation that focuses solely on pediatric neurosciences via a comprehensive medical program.

Essentially, Miami Children’s Hospital and their clinical studies are making great strides in the medical field. The Miami Children’s Hospital clinical research centers study everything from adolescence medicine to cardiology to psychiatry. Currently, they’re doing a study regarding infectious diseases, where children have invasive candidiasis (a fungal infection) including candidemia, to access the “safety and tolerability of anidulafungin” regarding the diseases. Miami Children’s Hospital is also investigating children who had experienced mild or moderate closed head injuries, and will be using new imaging tests to look at the extent of the traumatic brain damage and how the child is recovering. Lastly, they are studying late occurring complications in childhood cancer.

The Jackson Health Systems is also made up of six different hospitals: the Jackson Memorial Hospital, Holtz Children Hospital, Jackson South Community Hospital, Jackson North Medical Center, Jackson Rehabilitation Center, and the Jackson Mental Health Hospital. Each hospital has the ability to provide state of the art care for its residents while focusing on various medical issues.

Jackson Memorial Hospital is the major training facility for University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, of which five of its programs have been highly regarded; neurology and neurosurgery; ear, nose and throat; urology; and finally nephrology or kidney disorders.

They currently are running a trial for Chronic Pelvic Pain of individuals with diagnoses or symptoms of interstitial cystitis and or chronic prostatitis. For Their Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, nose and throat) is devoted to researching two cochlear implants: the first one examines the efficiency of new devices and programming techniques while the second one looks at the “development alternative programming techniques, focusing on very young, language inhibited children”.

The Jackson Health Systems Clinical Trial Office offers support for investigators and the staff who work with the clinical trials. They offer education and training programs, representation and advocacy for clinical research, and providing the staff with resources that they need.

Many well-known hospitals in Miami are doing their best to provide the best health care possible to its residents and people in general.
