The doctors see this as a chance to learn about the long-term effects that methotrexate has on brain function. With what they learn from this clinical trial, they hope to be able to plan cancer treatments in earlier stages.

Cixutumbumab in Treating Patients With Relapsed or Refractory Solid Tumors

Also at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, doctors are studying antibodies, like Cixutumumab, in patients with relapsed or refractory solid tumors. This particular antibody, Cixumtumumad, can block tumor growth in a number of ways. One way is that it can block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Another way it helps is that is can find tumor cells and help kill them or will carry tumor-killing substances to them. This is currently a Phase II trial and is meant to show any side effects and how well Cixumtumumab works with patients being treated that have relapsed or refractory solid tumors. The trial started in January of 2009 and is an interventional study. It is currently recruiting both genders up to 30 years of age.

Study of Kidney Tumors in Young Patients

Another study being performed at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital is one about kidney tumors in young patients. This study is collecting and storing sample of tumor tissue, blood, and urine from patients with this type of cancer. The laboratory will study these samples to help doctors learn more about the changes that occur in DNA and identify biomarkers related to the cancer. It may also help the study of cancer in the future. This trial is an observational study, and is currently recruiting. The trial is open to both genders up to 29 years of age.
