California Clinical Trials Spotlight

Clinical trial coordinator and her team of researchersCurrently, there are a large number of clinical trials being conducted across the state of California. Pharmaceutical companies are conducting various clinical trials focused on anything from psychiatric disorders to immunology to plastic surgery procedures. As more studies are completed, medical researchers are gaining a better understanding of these various diseases and disorders, and they are developing more effective treatments. Some of the best clinical trial centers in California can be found at CNS, the University of California, the University of Southern California, Northern California Research, and California Clinical Trials.

CyberKnife Radiosurgery for Localized Prostatic Carcinoma

Compared with the more traditional prostate high dose rate (HDR) treatment, virtual HDR CyberKnife (CK) prostate treatment has a comparable morbidity and efficacy level, but it can be administered without the need for catheters and hospital admission. With that in mind, this method of treatment has become more patient-friendly when compared to the more traditionally practiced prostate HDR brachytherapy. This latest clinical trial is being conducted at the CyberKnife Centers of San Diego. Medical researchers want to be sure that Virtual HDR CyberKnife prostate treatment has a high efficacy level coupled with lower acute and chronic morbidity compared to local prostate cancer treatment methods, such as permanent seed prostate brachytherapy.

Dose-ranging Study of Vilanterol (VI) Inhalation Powder in Children

This is a phase II double-blind clinical trial which is enrolling children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old who have been struggling with persistent and uncontrolled asthma. Once a participant has enrolled in this study, they will need to discontinue their current asthma medication and start taking an open label fluticasone propionate (FP) 100mcg twice daily via DISKUS/ACCUHALER and salbutamol/albuterol. Participants will then be required to take this medication throughout the double-blind treatment period for this Vilanterol (VI) Inhalation Powder study. At the third visit, the subjects who meet the randomization eligibility criteria will then be administered either vilanterol or a placebo via the Novel Dry Powder Inhaler (NDPI) once a day for 4 weeks in addition to taking the open-label fluticasone propionate twice a day for the entirety of the treatment period. This clinical trial is being conducted at the GSK Investigational Site in Anaheim, CA.

Lamictal as Add-on Treatment for Bipolar I Disorder in Pediatric Patients

This is one of the many clinical trials being conducted in Anaheim, CA, and it is also taking place at the GSK investigational Site. In order to ensure the most accurate results, it has been set up as a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized clinical trial. Researchers are interested to test lamictal as an add-on maintenance treatment for pediatric outpatients (between the ages of 10 and 17) who have been diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder. This clinical trial will consist of 4 phases: Initial screening (approximately 2 weeks), the open label phase (this could last for up to 18 weeks), the randomized phase (could take up to 36 weeks), and finally the taper and follow-up phase (should take around 4 weeks).

Efficacy and Safety Study of CAL-101 in Patients with Indolent B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

This clinical trial is being conducted by the Central Hematology Oncology Medical Group in Los Angeles, Ca. Their research team would like to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CAL-101 in participants who had previously been unsuccessfully treated for indolent Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (iNHL). More importantly, all of these patients had a case of iNHL that was resistant to both rituximab and to alkylating-agent-containing chemotherapy. The researchers’ primary objective for this clinical trial is to assess the participants’ overall response rate to this experimental form of treatment.
