MD Anderson Provides Improved Breast Cancer Screening in Houston

Breast cancer screening tests available for womenThe University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Memorial Hermann Health System are going to be working together to help save more women from developing breast cancer.

These two Texas health care giants are going to provide a new level of specialized screening through an established network of community breast cancer centers around Houston.

The MD Cancer Center will be the exclusive provider of these specialized breast radiology services for half of Memorial Hermann’s breast cancer centers in Texas. The following centers will provide this new form of screening:

  • Northeast
  • Southwest
  • Memorial City
  • The Woodlands
  • Sugar Land

After that, they’ll be expanding the network to centers in:

  • Northwest
  • Katy
  • Pearland
  • Pasadena
  • Upper Kirby

Benefits of This New Agreement

With the agreement in place, the network will provide diagnostic and screening tests, using the existing technical resources (including staff and equipment) at Memorial Hermann. Test results will be interpreted by breast radiologists that have been trained at MD Anderson. They’ll also provide further consultation for patients and perform any needed biopsies.

The agreement was approved this month by the University of Texas Board of Regents during its regular meeting.

“Memorial Hermann and MD Anderson share a commitment to provide high quality cancer care to communities across our region,” stated Dan Wolterman, president and CEO of the Memorial Hermann Health System. “Our partnership will combine the convenience and advanced technologies of Memorial Hermann’s breast imaging centers with interpretation and consultation from the world renowned cancer expertise of MD Anderson, enabling our institutions to provide patients with unparalleled access to specialized breast imaging services close to home.

Expanding Access to Breast Care in Texas

Advanced healthcare technology in TexasMD Anderson’s partnership will help expand public access to high quality screening, clinical trials and specialized breast cancer care. This will also mean that more Texans will have the option of receiving state-of-the-art treatment close to home through Memorial Hermann’s expansive network of centers.

“We’re excited to join with Memorial Hermann, one of the nation’s leading health care organizations, to deliver high quality, collaborative breast care to women across the Houston area,” said Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., president of MD Anderson Cancer Center. “Prevention, early detection, risk reduction, education and outreach are key components of our mission. This collaboration allows us to take our screening expertise to more women, who can take comfort in knowing their imaging will be provided by radiologists who have dedicated their careers to caring for patients with cancer.”
