Since 1969, the physicians of Gastroenterology, Ltd. have been committed to provide state-of-the-art medical care for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver disease. We strive to preserve quality of life and wellbeing to all of our patients by continually seeking the latest and most effective methods of diagnosis and treatment. We are accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).

Our highly qualified physicians are all board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Gastroenterology and have graduated from medical schools as diverse as the New York University School of Medicine, Cornell University Medical College and the Medical College of Virginia. Continuous post-graduate studies provide assurance that our physicians are abreast of the very latest in advanced medical technology.

Members of our staff are fluent in English, Spanish, Korean, Greek, Romanian and Tagalog.

We are a mid-sized medical practice located in Virginia Beach, Virginia with a staff of 8 physicians, 2 nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical assistants, a variety of administrative personnel including a Clinical Research Coordinator, billing specialists, and schedulers.

Our Investigators are known for their high caliber work, research experience, community reputations, and significant patient databases which ensure timely and easily met enrollment goals and successfully completed clinical trials.

Gastroenterology, Ltd is a division of Tidewater Gastroenterology, PLLC

Since 2001, Gastroenterology, Ltd. has participated in studies that have researched topics such as: comparisons of pharmaceutical drugs to treat Upper Gastrointestinal Mucosa, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, gastric ulcers, reflux issues, and Hepatitis C treatment.

Gastroenterology, Ltd. has worked with sponsors such as: Pfizer, Proctor and Gamble, AstraZeneca, Hepatitis Resource Network and Solvay Pharmaceuticals.

In addition to conducting studies in collaboration with a variety of sponsors we have worked with Clinical Research Organizations such as Quintiles and PRA International, Inc.

Principal Investigator:

DAVID H. STOCKWELL, MD

Dr. Stockwell received his undergraduate degree in literature from Duke University, and he completed his premedicine courses at the University of Virginia. Dr. Stockwell received his degree in medicine from Cornell University Medical College. He did his internship and residency in internal medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston where he served as Chief Resident. He then completed a three-year fellowship in gastroenterology at Brigham & Women's Hospital. During fellowship, he completed a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. Prior to joining Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 2006, Dr. Stockwell was an Instructor in Medicine with Harvard Medical School and practiced gastroenterology in the Boston area. He is currently an Assistant Professor with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Virginia.

Sub-Investigators:

ALAN P. GANDERSON, MD
Dr. Ganderson is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. He did his internship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of California Health Sciences Center in Los Angeles. Subsequently, he served two years in the United States Air Force, followed by completion of a two-year fellowship in gastroenterology at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Ganderson began practice with Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 1978. He has served as Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and President of the Medical Staff of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He is currently Director of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

JAMES W. RAWLES, JR., MD
Dr. Rawles earned both a Master's Degree in biochemistry and a Doctor of Medicine degree at the Medical College of Virginia. He did his residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, after which he completed a three-year fellowship in gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center. Dr. Rawles joined Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 1987. He has served as President of the Medical Staff of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

JAN A. JANSON, MD, FACG
Dr. Janson is a graduate of the New York University School of Medicine. He did his residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, followed by a three-year fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, where he received advanced training in operative gastrointestinal endoscopy. He joined the practice in 1990. Dr. Janson has served as both Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine and President of the Medical Staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

JEFFREY H. KAUFFMAN, MD
Dr. Kauffman is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia where he also did his residency in internal medicine. During his three-year fellowship in gastroenterology at MCV, he received advanced training in operative gastrointestinal endoscopy and photodynamic therapy. He joined Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 1997 and is an Assistant Professor with Eastern Virginia Medical School.

KEVIN T. WHITE, MD
Dr. White received his undergraduate degree in Biology from The College of William and Mary and his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Following residency, he completed a three-year fellowship in gastroenterology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. Dr. White joined Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 2004.

CHANG-KYEONG OH, MD
Dr. Oh received his undergraduate degree in biology from Stanford University in Stanford, California and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York. Dr. Oh completed his residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Campus and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Following residency, Dr. Oh completed a three-year fellowship in gastroenterology, at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. Dr. Oh joined Gastroenterology, Ltd. in August 2006. Dr. Oh is fluent in three languages.

GLEN M. ARLUK, MD
Dr. Arluk received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1994 and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1998. Dr. Arluk joined the United States Navy and completed his internal medicine residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. He subsequently transferred to Washington D.C. and completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed Army Medical Center and his endoscopic ultrasound training at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He completed his active duty service as the Director of Advanced Endoscopy at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth and joined Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 2007. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Administration

JAMES E. MORGAN
Mr. Morgan is a Certified Public Accountant with over 20 years of finance and administration experience. Prior to joining Gastroenterology, Ltd., in 2007, James was the administrator of a multispecialty group practice in Georgia. At Gastroenterology, Ltd. he oversees the areas of finance, human resources, medical reimbursement, CQI, marketing and all operational aspects of the practice.

RYAN MARIE DIDUK, MPH
Ms. Diduk holds a Master's of Public Health from East Stroudsburg University with a concentration in research. She has over 4 years of research experience, including 2 years of medical evaluation research and joined Gastroenterology, Ltd in 2009.

Nurse Practitioners

KATHRYN M. CARPENTER, MSN, RN, CRNP
Mrs. Carpenter is a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia. She obtained her Masters Degree in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She also worked as a registered nurse for over two years on a surgery and transplant floor at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mrs. Carpenter joined Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 2007 and has previous experience in the field of Gastroenterology.

MELISSA T. SHEARER, MSN, RN, CFNP
Mrs. Shearer is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia and a Masters Degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University. She has worked as a registered nurse in various hospital departments since 1980 and became a Nurse Practitioner in 2004. She has been providing care in the Family Practice setting until joining Gastroenterology, Ltd. in 2009.

Hampton Roads is notable for its year-round ice-free harbor, for United States Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, NASA, Marines, and Army facilities, shipyards, coal piers, and hundreds of miles of waterfront property and beaches, all of which contribute to the diversity and stability of the region's economy. The land area includes dozens of cities, counties and towns on the Virginia Peninsula and in South Hampton Roads. Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology, Ltd. is a private practice outpatient facility offering diagnostic and treatment services including M2A endoscopy and Remicade infusions. The facility also houses the Colon Cancer Prevention and Endoscopy Center of Virginia Beach, which is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Most procedures, including colonoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies, and flexible sigmoidoscopies are conducted at the Colon Cancer Prevention and Endoscopy Center of Virginia Beach, but more in-depth or special needs procedures are performed at the Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, located across the street from the practice.

We have a fully staffed research department including a lab processing area. We also have a -20 °c freezer, an ECG machine, a locked drug storage area that is temperature controlled. We also have a temperature-controlled refrigerated drug storage area as well as a dedicated space for monitors.
