The Rogosin Institute (RI) was established in 1983 as an independent, not-for-profit institution for research, treatment and education in kidney disease (including dialysis and transplantation) and cardiovascular disease (secondary to cholesterol and other lipid disorders). The Rogosin Institute also has research programs in polycystic kidney disease, hypertension, endotoxemia, cancer of the kidney and diabetes. The Rogosin Institute is affiliated with New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College and is a corporate member of New York Presbyterian Healthcare network. Rogosin Institute members are on the staff of New York Presbyterian Hospital and have appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College. Several are also on the adjunct faculty at The Rockefeller University.

The Rogosin Institute has been involved in clinical research since it's inception in 1983. Phase I' IV studies, as well as investigator initiated studies, are conducted. Our therapeutic interests and clinical trial experience with more than 50 pharmaceutical companies and Contract Research Organizations include:

  • End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) involving subjects who are on hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or nocturnal hemodialysis.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease
  • Chronic Renal Insufficiency involving subjects who are pre-dialysis
  • Hypertension; primary and secondary (to renal disease)
  • Transplantation (Kidney and Kidney/Pancreas)
  • Coronary artery disease

The investigators at The Rogosin Institute include 22 physicians (two with Ph.D. degrees) and two Ph.D's. The Clinical Research Program offers five full time clinical research coordinators, including a Clinical Research Manager, three research nurse practitioners and one part time clinical research assistant.

Barry Smith, M.D., Ph.D.
Area of Expertise: Neurosurgery, public health, oncology.

Dr. Smith is the Director of The Rogosin Institute and The Rogosin Institute Dreyfus Health Foundation and the Director of Research at The Rogosin Institute Xenia Division. Dr. Smith is a Professor of Surgery, Weill Cornell Medical College and an Attending Surgeon, New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell. His research focuses on oncology, diabetes and neurological complications of systemic disease.

Kurt H. Stenzel, M.D.
Area of Expertise: Nephrology/Oncology.

Dr. Stenzel is the Medical Director, Executive Vice President and Treasurer of The Rogosin Institute. Dr. Stenzel is a Professor of Medicine, Surgery, and Biochemistry at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell

Bruce R. Gordon, M.D.
Area of Expertise: Cholesterol and lipid disorders, plasmapheresis

Dr. Gordon is the Director of the Clinical Research Program, Chief Operating Officer of The Rogosin Institute and Co-Director of The Rogosin Institute's Maurice R. Greenberg Comprehensive Lipid Control Center. Dr. Gordon is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Gordon has the overall responsibility of the Clinical Research Program and has been conducting clinical research for more than 25 years. His research focuses primarily on lipids and cardiovascular research at The Comprehensive Lipid Control Center.

Betty-Jane Sloan, BS, MA, Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC)
Ms. Sloan has 19 years experience in clinical research at The Rogosin Institute and is the Research Manager for the Clinical Research Program. Ms. Sloan is a Staff Associate in the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

The Rogosin Institute employs a highly trained staff of more than 250 professionals including nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, dialysis technicians, phlebotomy technicians, clinical research staff and registered dietitians.


The Rogosin Institute's patient facilities are located in New York City. Patients mainly come from the greater New York and tri-state area, which is populated with approximately 20,000,000 people. The Rogosin Institute has access to many diverse nationalities and ages.

The Rogosin Institute has clinical facilities in Manhattan at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornel Medical College as well as in Queens and Brooklyn. The Rogosin Institute offers both outpatient facilities and inpatient facilities. Research facilities are also located in Xenia, Ohio.

RI outpatient facilities include:

  • Jack J. Dreyfus Clinic, an outpatient facility for the prevention and treatment of renal (kidney) disease.
  • Susan R. Knafel Polycystic Disease Center, located within the Jack J. Dreyfus Clinic, to diagnose, and to prevent and treat complications related to polycystic kidney disease.
  • Hemodialysis Center located in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
  • David D. Thompson Transplantation Center for kidney transplants as well as simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants.
  • Maurice R. Greenberg Comprehensive Lipid Control Center for prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis and its risk factors for adults and children.
  • The Rogosin Institute Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Clinical Laboratory provides general and specialized laboratory tests in all areas.

RI inpatient facilities in New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College include:

  • The Rogosin Institute Wing for patients requiring hospitalization for kidney disease related problems and kidney transplantation.
  • The Rogosin Institute Ralph J. Bunch Dialysis and Apheresis Center for patients undergoing intensive care hemodialysis or LDL-apheresis, which is a specialized treatment for severe genetic hypercholesterolemia.

Clinical and Translational Science Centers
The Rogosin Institute has access to both New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College Clinical and Translational Science Center and The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science for inpatient studies.
