Featured Clinical Trials in Florida Looking for Volunteers

Success of clinical trials in FloridaFlorida may not conduct as many clinical trials as California but it’s been gaining ground rapidly. Many of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world have shown interest in sponsoring new clinical studies in the Sunshine State. Areas of focus for Florida include:

These sponsors have invested significant funding in ensuring that Florida’s research infrastructure continues to develop. This has enabled them to ramp up the number of trials conducted exponentially over time. So, it may come as no surprise that the state is home to some of the leading clinical trial facilities in the country. Among the most prominent include:

Are you looking to enroll in a clinical trial in Florida? Here are some of the latest studies to be featured on Clinical Trials GPS from the Sunshine State:

Study of New Treatment in Subjects with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis

This study is being conducted at the University of Miami Medical School along with numerous other centers around the country. Investigators are looking to test a new treatment with participants that have primary or secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Participants will be given this new drug twice a day for 96 weeks. Applicants must already be getting treated with any of the following to qualify:

  • Long-term MS disease modifying therapy (DMT)
  • Interferon beta
  • Glatiramer acetate (GA)

Prospective Cohort for the Evaluation of Biomarkers Following HCT

The primary goal of this clinical study is to establish a cohort of biological samples taken from volunteers who were previously treated at BMT CTN centers. This cohort will become a valuable biospecimen resource when conducting allogeneic HCT correlative studies in the near future. It has been designed to allow for multiple types of data to be integrated seamlessly with high quality clinical phenotypes and outcomes data.

Clinical investigators in Jacksonville will be able to use the data to identify people at risk for several clinically significant complications occurring after allogeneic HCT including:

  • Chronic GVHD
  • Acute GVHD
  • Relapse
  • Mortality
  • Infection
  • Organ toxicity

NSABP Patient Registry and Biospecimen Profiling Repository

This study is being conducted in Orlando, FL. Researchers will be collecting and analyzing tissue samples taken from patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. The goal is to construct a molecularly profiled tissue repository that investigators will use as a patient registry for future clinical trials. They want to test these tissue samples in order to identify biomarkers that could be linked to this type of cancer. If successful, specific patients can be offered an opportunity to enroll in the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project if new agents are developed that target their biomarkers.
